I am SUCH a procrastinator when it comes to wrapping gifts during the holidays. Every year I wait until the week before Christmas and then I’m like AHHHHHHHHH when am I going to get all of this done?
Plus, now that my oldest is five, he’s getting REAL smart. Like, he will notice if he sees a roll of wrapping paper I’m using, and then sees it under the tree. That seeeeeeems suspicious Mom…
Therefore, I can’t ever wrap things until he is asleep, and I’m freaking tired. Or I could do it while he’s at school but…. #otherpriorities
It does make me feel a little less bad about myself when I think about my parents though. They had four kids and waited until Christmas Eve (once we were all asleep!) to wrap EVERYTHING. They’d drink rum and Cokes and wrap soooo many presents. No wonder it was always hard to wake them up on Christmas morning. And no wonder my dad is a wrapping ninja. Add that to the list of things he could do for a living (along with sewing and plumbing).
Ok ANYYYYYWAY, I’ve finally started to kind of enjoy wrapping. I try to make my gifts look like I spent some time on them because when they’re wrapped beautifully, I think the gift feels extra special.
Here are a few of my favorite tips to make your presents stand out under the tree:
- Pick a mixture of different patterns and textures of wrapping paper that all coordinate. I like to get mine at Homegoods-– they always have so much to choose from and usually have a variety of coordinating patterns. I personally like to find patterns that also have similar tones/colors as my tree decorations!
2. Do the same thing with ribbon. Find a few different kinds that vary in texture and color. I love to do a few that feel more rustic, mixed with some glittery ones and maybe a pop of color.
3. Once your gift is wrapped, don’t be afraid to layer your different ribbon choices, or be creative using two or three! I love the way it looks when I use two different textures of ribbon.
4. Lastly, pick a little something extra to tuck into the ribbon. It could be a little branch, some greenery, a mini pine cone, a candy cane, a small ornament, etc. This year I grabbed a grouping of greenery from my local grocery store and just cut small pieces off of the branches. You could also go the craft store route and get something fake! I’ve also heard you can call places that sell Christmas trees and they will give you their tree clippings for free (Home Depot, Whole Foods, etc.)
Another fun thing you can do is attach a fun gift tag. This year, I felt like it was a little much with my intense ribbon and greenery situation. But if you go with something a little more simple in terms of ribbon/extras, some fun gift tags can add a special touch as well!
Hope this gave you some inspiration to stop procrastinating and get wrapping. The countdown to Santa’s arrival is ON!!!!!!!
