Anyone else crazy like me and get the itch to decorate for Christmas like right after Halloween??
In my mind, for the amount of work it takes to get all the decorations up, I want them to be up for longer than 3 weeks. So as much as I wanted to put up the trees the day after Halloween, I did wait a little longer and put them up the weekend before Thanksgiving.
Cue all the grinches in the world that are rolling their eyes right now. You go back to your little mountain above Whoville and leave me alone!!!
I wanted to share some decor tips for decorating your tree. Because quite honestly, I think it’s really hard. There are millions of ways to do it, but my mother-in-law taught me some really great tips a few years ago that really made my trees look extra beautiful. She has been an interior designer her entire life, so you can imagine how insanely gorgeous her 5 trees are. Yes I said 5.
First, if you don’t have a pre-lit tree, make sure you start with the lights. If you’re a ribbon person, ribbon should come next! I’ve never been big on ribbon but I do think it can look so beautiful if it’s done right.
After the lights, I love to add some texture with what I’m going to call “branches” because I don’t really know what else to call them. See below for what I mean:
You can find TONS of these at basically any craft store (Michael’s, Hobby Lobby and At Home are my favorite places to find them). I typically buy 3-4 different styles of these for my tree, and I get around 5-10 of each style.
All you do is stick them in toward the trunk of your tree and let some of the end of the branch hang out. Space them out in different places from the top to the bottom of the tree so that it’s completely random. You don’t want to place the same branches super close together– try to intermingle your different styles!
Next comes ornaments. I think the key with ornaments is buying lots of different sizes, colors and finishes. I love to buy the HUGE sparkly ones to shove a little further into the tree to fill dead space where you might be able to see some of the trunk. Then, I’ll buy a couple other sizes in the same color family (maybe some matte, some shiny, some sparkly).
I like to go overboard with the ornaments. I love the way it looks when it’s super full!
I hope this might help with your tree decorating endeavors! I was considering doing a new mini tree this year in our basement by the bar, using little mini liquor bottles as the ornaments… bad idea? Or best idea ever?
