DIY Wedding Donut Display

by | Jan 11, 2019 | Lifestyle

When we were planning our wedding, Peter and I were so torn on what we wanted to do for dessert.  I had talked to so many people that said they NEVER eat cake at a wedding.  But, then there are people like my grandpa and my mother-in-law who really look forward to wedding cake at every wedding they go to.

So, in an effort to keep the tradition alive but not spend a G on a freaking cake, we decided to do a small classic wedding cake, and then something else a little more fun.

With crafty donuts being such a huge trend these days, we thought it would be fun to make a big donut display!  The Little Donut Shop down on Ohio State’s campus was great to work with and even did a little tasting for Peter and Peter Joseph.  Can you imagine how pumped our 5-year-old was to go eat tons of donuts with his dad?!

We ended up doing a big variety of all the flavors they have on their menu.  Check these out and tell me it doesn’t make your mouth water:

In terms of how they would be displayed, it took me some time to figure something out.  I looked online for different acrylic displays and they were either too small for 200+ donuts, or they cost an absolute arm and leg.

Enter my crafty, wood-working husband.  He decided he was going to make the donut wall.  You can imagine my hesitation…while he is a very talented wood-worker, our wedding was extremely elegant and in a marble ballroom.  I couldn’t have the donut wall looking like it belonged in Chuck-E-Cheese.

He ended up doing an amazing job.  He bought a couple big pieces of white laminate wood, and purchased a few things from Amazon:

  1. Wooden sticks to hang the donuts on (6 inches long, and we painted them white).
  2. Liquid Nails glue.
  3. A couple of pretty donut signs for the top corners.

He made a grid on the wood using a pencil to make sure everything was equally spaced.  The pegs were 6 inches apart vertically, and 8 inches apart horizontally.  He then used a drill to make small holes, and inserted the pegs into the holes with some glue on the end.

I can’t even tell you how many people raved about this donut wall you guys.  It was hilarious.  Especially the older people…they were like OMG WHAT? A DONUT WALL?! Like it was the most outlandish creative thing in the entire universe.  Little did they realize this has 100% been done before, by basically every basic girl on Pinterest with a wedding board.

Here are a few pictures of the finished product!  I asked our florist to bring some simple greenery to add a little color. This was extremely inexpensive compared to a lavish wedding cake!  If you’re looking to do something a little more fun and affordable– I highly recommend trying this idea!

Hello

I’m Elizabeth

I’m a wife, a mom of three boys, a stylist, and a not-your-typical blogger. I started this blog as a creative outlet after I left my fun-but-demanding job at an ad agency. It’s grown into such a fun, no judgment, community of women that have become virtual friends.  I am so glad you’re here!

Check these out too!
